At present the Sacred Childhoods' projects are solely focused in Indonesia, South East Asia, although we hope to create new projects in South America and Africa in next next few years as well.
Most people have heard very little about Indonesia except for Bali which receives thousands of tourists each year. Indonesia is actually home to 240 million people and is an archipelago of around 19,000 islands; the largest chain of islands in the world. It is estimated that around two thirds of the total population live on less than $2 per day, the world wide recognised measure of absolute poverty. It is an incredibly diverse part of the world, with many remote villagers still living a traditional tribal lifestyle, although the cities are very opposite.
Children are of course particularly vulnerable to the effects of extreme poverty, but increasingly human trafficking and organised abuse of children is becoming a problem.
Sacred Childhoods has so far established projects on the islands of Bali and Sulawesi and in time we would like to launch projects on other islands, particularly the more remote islands in Eastern Indonesia where there are fewer NGOs and greater poverty in general. We are mindful that as an organisation we need to grow at a steady and sustainable rate, so we are developing and expanding our projects carefully and slowly each year.
