Improving Sanitation

923,000,000 people around the world live in slums, in Asia that accounts for 554,000,000 people. Poor sanitation and hygiene kills 250,000,000 people every year. 48% of people living in Asia do not have adequate sanitation

The problem of poor sanitation in Indonesia is so bad that it is hard to know where to start. Many of the orphanages and children’s projects run by local people exist in conditions similar to that of their neighbourhood slums.

Sacred Childhoods is slowly working to improve the sanitary conditions at a number of orphanages by putting in new plumbing systems and creating waste disposal sites. Without these, sewage often runs down embankments and into the rivers where the children drink and bathe.

Our volunteers also bring out sanitary materials, shampoos, and soaps to help the children stay clean. Showers are being installed where possible.
