What Your Money Can Do...
At Sacred Childhoods we do not currently make the offer to privately
sponsor an individual child because (in the settings of orphanages
and children's projects in which we work) it is difficult to justify
that the full needs of one child are met whilst another child who
isn't as yet being sponsored goes without. Instead we offer than anyone
donating over £500 can be involved in the discussions that
select which project the money is spent on.
These discussions
take place (via email) with the team, the trustees and the donor, so
if you are passionate about a particular area (i.e. the creation of a
new Safe House for rescued child slaves) we will do our utmost to channel
the funds to this area. In such cases, and as a way of providing
comprehensive feedback, Sacred Childhoods stays in close contact with
the donor who will also receive a video evidencing the
progress of that project.
Because western currencies are so strong against the Indonesian Rupiah
even relatively small donations can make a big difference. Below
are some examples of what your money could do...
- £10 can buy stocks of rice and meats that will
feed an orphanage with 200 children for a day.
- £50 can buy a new little cooker so that they
don’t
have to cook over an open fire which causes long term health problems
from the constant inhalation of smoke.
- £100 can pay for a child to return to their original
island to be reunited with their families from which they were stolen/conned.
- £200 can pay for all 32 children
at an orphanage where the children were rescued from slavery to go
on their first ever trip to the zoo to see animals that they don’t even know exist
like elephants and tigers (only tourists can ever afford this kind
of trip)!
- £1000 can pay for our first Safe
House to be established where children can be rescued from their existence
as child sex slaves, child soldiers or child labourers.
- £10 paid each month by Direct Debit can
pay for a local doctor to visit the children at a children’s
project/orphanage once a month.
- £500 can pay for an Aids Awareness
program to visit our projects and offer advice and condoms for 1 year.
- £200 can pay for a new
waste disposal system and showers to be fitted at an orphanage that
Sacred Childhoods is currently helping where 200 children are living
in terrible conditions where disease spreads quickly.
- £1000 can start a Street
School in the slum areas of Java to launch and run for 1 year where
around 50 street children can receive an education (the teaching will
be covered under our volunteers program).
- £3000 can pay for all 50 children
at the street school to receive the food each day that they would
otherwise be searching for on the streets (that’s 16p
per day per child).
- £30 can buy a bunk bed with
mattresses for two children so that they no longer have to sleep on
the bare concrete floor in damp and dirty conditions.
- £5000 could
open a new orphanage for abandoned children.
- Your free time could be donated to helping orphanages set up
their own websites and gain independence.
- You could
also offer a Micro-Loan to a member of the community who wishes to
start up their own small business allowing families to lift themselves
out of poverty. You can help them start their own business for as little
as £100.
- £10 as a monthly Direct Debit can help with
the costs of keeping our researchers in the field. Our research
program is a vital part of Sacred Childhoods and whilst volunteer researchers
cover most of their own costs there are always further costs including
printing and travel expenses that can mount up.
